Join Asha in her favourite city, Rio de Janeiro for THE holiday of a lifetime and kiss the “winter blues” goodbye.
Mix unforgettable skating, awesome sight-seeing and beach time with sunshine, great food and good people and you have the perfect holiday recipe.
The video above was put together by Dietmar who was one of the skaters who came on the Skatefresh Rio 2016 and 2017 trips. It gives you a taste of what you will be experiencing in 2018.

This video was prepared by Asha to advertise the Rio 2016 trip and most of it holds true for the 2018 trip too, though the dates have changed and also some of the Core Excursions are different. But again it will give you a feel of what the Rio 2018 trip is all about and what you can expect to see and do in this beautiful city.
Asha spends almost every winter in Rio visiting her best friend and combining rest with superb skating under beautiful Brazilian sunshine. “Rio feels like my second home”. Skatefresh’s trips to Rio are a wonderful opportunity to discover with Asha this incredible city both on and off skates. Asha speaks fluent Portuguese and she will be with you on all skate sessions and excursions and will be giving you lots of tips on what to eat, drink and enjoy.
The 8 day trip includes 2 Sundays when Rio’s coastal/beach roads are closed and skating options are vast! There will be 6 skate trips in total usually taking place in the mornings or early evenings when it’s cooler. Apart from Sundays, most of the skating takes place on cycle paths running along the beaches and around the Lagoon (behind Ipanema beach).
Lesson time is built into every skate, so you’ll be having mini-workshop clinics on various topics, e.g. slopes, speed, backwards and dance. We also have a longer class session at the skaters rink (as featured in many of Asha’s videos).
One evening there will be an opportunity for a sunset beach skate dance lesson followed by drinks at a nearby beach bar. There is also an option of learning “Skate Park” the beginnings of ramps, boxes, slopes and half pipes…
With Asha’s expert eye on your skating, it is highly likely your skills will improve during the week.

The Core Sightseeing Excursions
For skaters new to Rio the trip includes five Core excursions which are essential for getting a feeling for the city (and seeing it from up high which we cannot do on skates). We will have a private tour guide with us for these excursions who can answer all our questions about local culture, history and what we see. If you want to do more sight-seeing, our guide can help you organise extra optional excursions for your week. The Core “must see” excursions include:
- Sugarloaf Mountain visit
- Christ the Redeemer Statue visit
- Favela Tour (with local resident) and Jungle Hike (uphill) to lookouts.
- Downtown City Tour with local guide
- Farewell dinner at Brazilian BBQ restaurant (with Caipirinhas at Asha’s place first)
For those skaters returning to Rio (from either 2016 or 2017 trips), you can choose which of the excursions you wish to join and you don’t have to repeat any that were included in previous trips.
A trip to Rio isn’t complete without some beach time and we recommend you stay in the Ipanema/Copacabana area of Rio where you are never more than a few blocks from the beach.
A new Core Excursion of Favela Walk and Jungle Hike has been added to the 2018 trip. We’ll be walking up through the favela and then into the jungle for some spectacular views of Copacabana, Sugar Loaf, Botafogo and Downtown. Complimentary drink on the way down at our guide’s bar and restaurant.
There is plenty of free time in the week to enjoy the beach and go to Asha’s favourite spots where she can help you order local beach food (fruit lollies, roasted Halloumi cheese on a stick, Brazilian beach crisps, Acai….).
All prices are now confirmed.
There are 2 parts to the trip; Skate Trips and the Core Excursions and both are compulsory (unless a non-skating friend/partner wishes to do just the Core Excursions). Returning Skatefresh trippers may opt out of any of the repeated Core Excursions if they wish.
Payment can be made in either £ sterling or in US dollars. Account information will be sent when you are offered a place on the trip.

How To Book
If you would like to reserve a place for this trip please email firstname.lastname@example.org giving us the name, email address and mobile phone number (cell phone) of the skaters and non-skaters you would like to book for.
If Asha already knows you from classes or previous trips then she can assess if your skill level is adequate for the skating we will be doing on the trip. If she has never seen you skate then you will be asked to submit a video in order to show your current level (including speed, stops and turns) and complete a short questionnaire. Obviously progress is possible and expected between now and the trip, but if skaters cannot keep a medium cruising speed and stop well with that speed and on slopes, Asha can recommend a course of training to help you reach the necessary minimum level required of all skaters.
Once Asha has approved your skating skills you will be offered a place on the trip. To confirm your acceptance we require a non-returnable deposit of £100 (or 128 US$) paid immediately. The balance of the trip fee will be payable by the end of December 2017.
Places on the trip are limited and usually fill up quickly, so don’t delay if you are keen to join Asha and the trippers in Rio.
It is also possible for non-skating partners to come on this trip and participate in the Core Excursions only.

Airport transfers to and from your accommodation cost about £20 each way – but we will help you arrange these.
All meals are yours to organise but Asha will be giving detailed information on good places to eat in the area and how to order simple things. After the excursions we will have the option to have snacks and drinks together in local places which is a must.
For those wanting to experience Rio’s night life there will be an optional Saturday night out dancing at the famous Rio Cenarium Club (but beware, Brazilian nights begin LATE). Entrance fee is payable.[/plsc_column][/plsc_columns]

Travel and Accommodation
As with all Skatefresh trips, you are responsible for booking your own flights and accommodation so that you can take advantage of booking early & getting the best deals or extending your holiday before or after the skating.
The 2018 trip is after Carnaval (which begins 9th Feb 2018) so accommodation prices should be lower than high season. We
have listed below some hotels, self catering apartments, Airbnb rooms/flats and there are even some hostels with single and mixed sex dormitory rooms which would be the cheapest options.
Please book your accommodation in the western end of Copacabana or the eastern end of Ipanema areas of the city close to “Posto 8”. The lifeguard stations on the beaches are all numbered 1km apart and Posto 8 is our skate meeting point. This will also mean you are close to the beaches for your time off. You can check the location of your chosen accommodation on Google Maps – enter the street name in the search box to view.[/plsc_column][plsc_column desktop=”6″ tablet=”6″ mobile=”12″][/plsc_column][/plsc_columns]
The suggestions listed below are intended to give you an approximate idea of prices but these cannot be guaranteed.
The skating events commence on the morning of Sunday 25th February so we recommend booking flights which arrive on or before Saturday 24th Feb, so that you don’t miss anything. If you’re not planning on extending your holiday in Brazil, we recommend return flights be booked for Monday 5th March, arriving in Europe on Tuesday 6th February.
Suggested flights to Rio from London
PLEASE NOTE THAT THESE EXAMPLE PRICES WERE SOURCED IN APRIL 2017 AND WILL UNDOUBTEDLY RISE THE LONGER YOU LEAVE IT.
British Airways, London to Rio – £844
Direct flights from Heathrow to Rio with British Airways leave London early morning (arrival time in Rio would be 2205, so to participate in the Sunday events you would need to travel on Friday or Saturday).
TAP – London to Rio (via Lisbon) – £589
Flights from Heathrow or Gatwick with one stop-over in Lisbon with TAP. Asha has taken this flight for years, it’s usually the cheapest airline to Rio. TAP flights run overnight and would arrive either on Saturday morning (leaving London on Friday) or Sunday morning (leaving London on Saturday), the latter not in time for you to join the Sunday morning skate trip, but you would make the excursion on Sunday afternoon.
It is also worth looking at Alitalia (£606), Iberia (£597), KLM (£608), Swiss Air (£591) and Lufthansa (£610) who all have cheaper flights available with one stop-over.
American Airlines fly from London to Rio via either New York or Miami – perhaps you could have a break in the US on your way home.
Suggestions for Accommodation
There are 3 main types of accommodation available in Rio: Hotels, Apartments and Hostels.
Example prices quoted here are for 7 nights and are correct as of 1st April 2017. However, you may need an 9 or 10 night stay depending on your flight arrangements. Remember that the Trip officially starts on Sunday 25th February in the morning and finishes in the evening of Sunday 4th March.
We recommend booking accommodation as close to Ipanema as possible as that is where our meeting points will be.
