Portsmouth

Saturday 9th October 2021

Join Asha for a one day Skatefresh Trip of Stops and Skills Training combined with Street Skating around Portsmouth.

This skate day is aimed at Intermediate level skaters and like all Skatefresh Trips you’ll need to apply so that we can control the average speed and ability level of the trip.

This day is a mixture of class time and street skating, giving you the opportunity to improve your stopping skills, skating stride, street skills and general skating under Asha’s watchful eye and top-notch technical instruction.

This trip is more appropriate for inline skaters than quad skaters but quad skaters are welcome to apply if they can show they have the skills and can skate fast enough. Quad skaters will need to have some street skating experience such as a Sunday Stroll or equivalent. Street skating is much more challenging on quads because of their reduced speed, so quaddies will generally need to be of slightly higher ability level to inliners just to keep up.

Portsmouth is the ideal skate town, being completely flat and boasting some superb smooth surfaces. We will also enjoy perfect tarmac for our class locations and be marshalled by local skaters (so we won’t get lost).

The day’s fee includes all skating, guiding and teaching. Travel and food are not included. Asha will be working with each skater throughout the day individually and in groups to identify your sticking points, fix bad habits and push your skating to the next level.

Itinerary

Saturday 9th October 2021

Meeting Point: Point: Portsmouth and Southsea station
https://g.co/kgs/qrQKkm

Time: 9.30am

The Trip begins outside Portsmouth and Southsea station, kitted up, skates on and be ready to go by 9:30am.

We skate from the station to The Guildhall where we have our first Stopping class where we will look at T-Stops, Turn Stops, Powerslides and combos of these. You will either be polishing these stops if you already have them, or learning some of them from scratch. We aim to increase your overall speed at which these methods stop you from.
Guildhall Class Location (in case you are late to the meeting point, you can catch us up there)

After a break we will then take to the streets to put our stops into practice at junctions with cars!
We’ll also look at your street skating stride technique and ease over obstacles and some kerb technique and practice as well.
We’ll stop for lunch in Palmerston Road where you can choose from various restaurants to suit your taste.

After lunch we then street skate again seeing more of the city and working on our fitness and end the day by the Clarence Esplanade in another large, open, smooth location for our General skills class. This will be a mixture of crossovers, backward skating, transitions, jumps and maybe a dance step to end on.

After a break those needing to leave by train will be escorted on skates back to the station (approx 5:30-6pm latest).

For those being picked up at Clarence Esplanade at the end of the day;

Ability Level Requirements

This trip is NOT appropriate for beginner skaters and all participants must be able to skate and stop confidently (using at least the heel brake). If you do not use a heel brake then you must be able to control your speed and stop on downhill slopes using any other stopping methods. The ability level of participants on the Trip needs to be closely matched so that the chosen terrain and average speeds can be appropriate for everyone and allow for greater learning.

Please do NOT make any travel or accommodation arrangements until you have been officially accepted onto the Trip (by email).

Travel

Please only book any travel arrangements once you received confirmation from Skatefresh that you have been accepted onto the trip.
