ROLLER PIZZA NIGHT

THURSDAY 23 APRIL 2020
TIME: 18:30
LOCATION: MENDS STREET JETTY

Asha will be joining the local Thursday Night Skate in Perth and seeing the city with the skaters who know it best.

DANCE CLASS

FRIDAY 24 APRIL 2020
TIME: 18:00 TO 20:00
Duration: 2Hrs
LOCATION: OPTUS STADIUM

Asha’s dance class can be attended by various ability levels from advanced beginner upwards. Each dance move comes with 3 options of difficulty (easy, medium and hard) so everyone can work at their own pace and progress into the harder forms even after the class is over.

This class will work through a series of individually taught moves (e.g. Moonwalk, New York Shuffle) which we will then sequence into a choreography that we’ll film, so you have reference to it forever. This means you can continue to improve it and teach it to your friends for performing at the roller disco, events and meet-ups.
Each dance move can be taken out of the dance choreography and used in your normal skating to spice up your flows and give your skating that extra ‘wow’ factor. This class is super fun and you’ll notice your improvement with every new move.

Please remove heel brakes for dance class if on inlines.
Quads also allowed with or without toe/heel stoppers.

BEGINNERS AND ADVANCED BEGINNERS

SATURDAY 25 APRIL 2020
TIME: 08:00 TO 10:00
DURATION: 2HRS
LOCATION: OPTUS STADIUM

This class will change the way you skate forever! You’ll feel confident and secure as you skate and know how to stop whenever you need to.

Most skaters are self-taught or have taken tips from friends, better skaters and YouTube. This leaves a lot of room for unclear or contradictory instructions and unsatisfying rewards.

Skating follows basic rules and principles of physics (gravity + velocity) so we can predict what can go wrong and why and therefore how to fix it. But better still, why not skate correctly from the beginning and not have bad
habits to correct in the long run?

This class will cover basic movement, acceleration, safe cruising, heel brake stopping and turning.
Please make sure your skates have a heel brake. If they do not, please consider the following. Without a heel brake you are choosing to remove the easiest and most effective stopping method from your repertoire and relying on much harder, intermediate level stopping techniques like the T- Stop. Nothing will stop you dead like a well implemented heel brake stop.

Would you remove the brakes from a bike or car and think that was ok?
Learning to heel brake will be the absolute marker of when your skating begins to improve in all directions. If you can’t stop well when you want to, your body will self-sabotage the entire process.

Stops and Slides

SATURDAY 25 APRIL 2020
TIME: 11:00 TO 14:00
DURATION: 3HRS
LOCATION: OPTUS STADIUM

The most important of ALL skate skills is how to stop and every skater should have several high functioning stopping methods in their tool kit (that stop you to a standstill from your highest skating speeds). If your stops don’t do this yet, know that you are pushing the risks, and invest in your safety and longevity on wheels. Not stopping well will reduce your overall learning curve of everything else on skates, so it really is THE place to focus. If you do just 1 class with Asha, do this one!

We begin with the easier stops and work through to more complex ones. Higher level skaters will perform the same stops and combos but from higher speeds (so increasing significantly the difficulty and challenge).

This workshop is NOT suitable for beginners (who should focus 100% on mastering the Heel Brake Stop before any other methods). If you are a Beginner check out the Beginner class above.

Stops we’ll cover in detail

  • Stepping Plough Stop
  • T-Stop (so that it actually stops you, both sides, on corners)
  • Turn Stops (pre-requisite for Hockey Stop and Parallel Slide)
  • Powerslide (forwards entry)
  • Combining Stops into functional combos
    (eg, T-Stop + Plough or Turn Slalom + T-Stop + Powerslide).

JUMPS AND CROSSOVERS

SATURDAY 25 APRIL 2020
TIME: 15:30 TO 17:30
DURATION: 2HRS
LOCATION: OPTUS STADIUM

Jumps can be a challenge as ‘the fear’ is real and your body knows one mistake could mean a painful landing. But having safe and confident jumps in your repertoire really sets you apart and adds to the fun of skating in the
city (where obstacles are actually begging to be jumped).

This class will sharpen your understanding of why jumps are potentially dangerous and then exactly how to make them safe, each and every time.

When you have these take-off and landing secrets, you’ll be able to apply them to a variety of jumps and situations.

Forward to Forwards Jumps; Two-footed, Horsey stride jump, Side grab, Long vs High jumps.

Forward to Backwards Jumps; Two-footed, Horsey Mohawk, In stride take-off.

Backwards to Forwards Jumps; Two-footed.

Backwards to Backwards Jumps; Two-footed, Horsey Crossover landing.

If you do not skate backwards you do not have to learn the backwards jumps versions but perfect the forward options instead;

Forward Crossovers when done well should create smooth acceleration and admiring glances. But often they create anxiety and have a low(ish) upper speed limit. Make your weaker side feel a lot less strange.

BACKWARDS + TRANSITIONS + BACK STOPS

SUNDAY 26 APRIL 2020
TIME: 08:00 TO 10:30
Duration: 2.5hrs
LOCATION: OPTUS STADIUM

Skating backwards will set you apart from the majority of skaters who never give this a go.
It will help to even out your weak and strong sides and give you lots of new, fun things to practice.

This class assumes you’ve never skated backwards before or you already skate backwards (either a bit or a lot). If you are already skating backwards then you’ll revise the basics and do these at double the speeds of the new backwards skaters, so revealing your gaps and weak points to be polished and perfected.

This class is ideal for slalomers who want to discover why certain slalom moves involving backwards might be eluding you.

Transitions from forwards to backwards and backwards to forwards when learned and sequenced make your skating look unique and impressive. Transition speeds are often much slower than people like and this class will address why this is.

We’ll also cover 3 backward stops including the Powerslide.

SKATE WELL FOR SPEED + FITNESS

SUNDAY 26 APRIL 2020
TIME: 11:00 TO 13:00
DURATION: 2hrs

Every skater spends MOST of their time on skates JUST SKATING!

However if your Skating Stride lacks the essentials you will not get the Fitness benefits that skating offers and you may create bad habits over time that can lead to ‘slow onset injuries’, little improvements in speed and boredom.

There are 3 parts to your skating Stride; The Push, the Glide and the Regroup.

All 3 must be correct for the stride to flow, look good and produce sustained high speeds.

Are you Pushing efficiently?

Is your Glide correct in terms of edges and cadence?

Is your Regroup position maximising your Stride or is it destroying all the hard work you just put in?

Asha’s series of Stride exercises is designed to progressively train all 3 parts of your Stride and help you understand what’s needed for super smooth (and fast) skating. This workshop will leave you with many drills to train and perfect over coming weeks which will improve your technique and your fitness and lower body strength if you do them regularly.

This workshops is NOT appropriate for Beginners. You should already be able to skate and
stop.

DOWNHILL

SUNDAY 26 APRIL 2020
TIME: 14:30 TO 16:30
DURATION: 2hrS
Location: TBA

There’s nothing like the feeling of spontaneous downhill acceleration to put you into blind panic in seconds. The most serious of skate accidents happen on slopes and usually not very steep ones!

To participate in this class you must have attended the Stops and Slides class (Sat 25th April, see above) as a pre-requisite. Only when you have several stopping methods learned can you begin combining them to produce smooth and efficient combos that control your speed and stop you on slopes.

This class will be conducted on a slope where the safe way to approach and train on downhills will be followed (we will not begin by bombing it from the top!) The exact location will be announced after Asha has inspected the possible hills and chosen the most appropriate one for the class.

This class will explore the concept of ‘bombing’ down a slope but from a progressive perspective. Too many skaters experience high speed wipe outs on slopes and this comes from disregarding basic slope principles.

This class will change your life by changing how you view and handle down hills forever. It will also clearly set your training path alight with what your next steps in the coming weeks will be.
