Why have a private lesson?
Many people prefer the idea of having private skate lessons instead of joining a group class. The advantages are of course that you will have the instructor all to yourself and the class can progress at your speed, allowing you to focus on your own learning. We recommend private skate lessons for any adult who feels very apprehensive about learning to skate, or those who have had ‘difficult’ past experiences or who may be returning following an injury or many years of absence from wheels. If you are very scared of falling over, then a private skate lesson is the best way to ensure that you fully adopt the correct techniques so that falling is rare.
We believe that you do not need to ‘learn by falling over’ and in fact that if you have your weight correctly on your feet, you will not fall over at all. Learning to skate correctly involves telling your body to do a sequence of very specific movements and to focus your attention on very small areas of your body. This is something that many people find tricky at first, but with an instructor just for you, they will be helping to continually bring your attention to where it is needed so that you learn in a smooth progression on exercises.
What’s the difference between the Instructor Levels?
All Skatefresh instructors are certified by the ICP (Inline Certification Programme) to either Level 1, 2 or 3. Level 1 instructors are trained to teach the Beginner syllabus of skills and usually have between 1-2 years experience. Level 2 instructors also teach Beginners but are further trained to teach intermediate skaters (backwards, speed and harder stops). They will have typically been teaching a long time (over 4 years and are much more experienced. Only Asha has Level 3 (and in fact she is one of only a handful of instructors worldwide who has ICP Level 3. Asha is also an Examiner for ICP for Levels 1 and 2 and she regularly certifies new and existing instructors in the ICP methods and syllabus. Asha is your expert for advanced and specialty skating (dance, street, fitness) but she may also be your first choice as a beginner, because she has over 13 years of experience and has taught skaters of all ages (3-83!).
If you begin with private lessons, you can decide whenever you wish to join one of our group classes and we encourage you to do so, so that you can meet other skaters of your ability level and have longer sessions under the eyes of an instructor (private lessons are 1 hour long while our groups are 2 and 3 hours long).
All our instructors carry at least one ICP (Inline Certification Programme) qualification. Skatefresh and all its instructors hold public liability insurance.
