I learnt to skate on quads but I switched to a pair of “inliners” when they first came over from the US. I used to skate at a local rink or at the odd rollerdisco but not much when I was a teenager. At University I played roller hockey and I even gave aggressive skating a go but my brief dalliance with ramps ended with a big bump! In July 2001 I moved to London and, thanks largely to the London Skate Street Skate, I felt like I rediscovered skating. I found myself skating every week and before long I’d gained enough confidence to volunteer as a marshal.
For me the best thing about skating has been meeting new people and making new friends. Before I came to London I barely new a soul south of Watford Gap. Now, I know at least a hundred skaters and I’m proud to say that a few of them are really good friends.
I have taken up skate hockey again in London and I have played rollersoccer and five-a-side football on skates. Last summer I captained the England team in the Rollersoccer World Cup. Unfortunately we didn’t win but there is always this year!
I get a real buzz out of helping people and I love to see beginners finally get the hang of skating. That’s why I wanted to become an instructor. I was surprised how much the IISA instructor course improved my own skating skills and I’d really recommend it. Now I’m really happy to have joined skatefresh and I’m looking forward to encouraging many more people to take up this great sport.
